Dundee United midfielder Calum Butcher believes that the team’s recent wins over promotion rivals Ayr United and Inverness Caledonian Thistle will give United a mental boost as they seek to return to the Scottish Premiership via the play-offs.
The Tangerines are unbeaten in three league games with a draw against Ross County and wins over Ayr and most recently Inverness. Despite United looking certain for 2nd place, Butcher still feels that it was important to get the wins against their rivals.
“I think Ayr and Inverness were two big games for us,” he said.
“We are going to play either one of them in the play-offs, so it was important to stamp our mark in those games.”
For Butcher, winning these games provides a big mental boost to the team as the play-offs approach.
“Playing them in play-offs is a different scenario,” he said.
“But I still think going into the games off the back of two wins so close together is a big mental step for us.”
On-loan striker Pavol Safranko scored a goal which has received global attention. The goal has been shared on Twitter by FIFA to their over 12.6 million followers and Butcher is full of praise also. Indeed, he believes it is the best goal he’s seen in a match in which he has played.
“It was a great goal,” he said.
“Going through the goals I’ve been involved with in games I think it is one of the best I’ve seen actually.
“For the ball not to touch the ground and then Pav to hit it with his left foot like that, it was a great goal.”
